Nutrition: Essential Fatty Acids

Essential Fatty Acids

Most fatty acids can be made in your body. However, linoleic acid and linolenic acid must be supplied by your diet. These are known as essential fatty acids (EFAs). Some others can be produced to a limited extent from these two essential fatty acids.

Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids keep cell walls in a good condition and working properly. They are also important in the transport, breakdown and excretion of cholesterol. They are used to manufacture other chemicals in your body such as prostaglandins. Dietary EFAs may also be involved in the brain development of babies. Most vegetable oils and oily fish are good source of EFAs.

Omega 3 and Omega 6 - Essential Fatty Acids

There are two families of EFAs. The first family are the omega-3 fatty acids, the second are the omega-6 fatty acids. Fats from both families are essential for your body to work. Your body can convert one omega-3 to another omega-3 fatty acid, but your body can not construct a omega-3 fatty acid within your body from other components.
