Carbohydrate Rich Cereal

Carbohydrates are your main source of energy, that is why we need carbohydrates. When they are combined with oxygen (oxidized) in cells, carbon dioxide and water are formed and energy is released. The equation is easy: Glucose + Oxygen = Energy + Carbon dioxide + Water. Now you know what is in carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are classified by nutritionists as sugars, starches and fiber. Their basic chemical structure is a compound called a saccharide. Sugars are formed either from a single type of saccharide called a monosaccharide (e.g. glucose) or from two saccharides joined together forming a disaccharide (e.g. sucrose). When many saccharides are joined together, polysaccharides are formed (e.g. starch).
